With more than 1,500 architects expected in Cannes in March, MIPIM has become a major event for international architecture.

“For architects, MIPIM offers a unique forum where they can showcase their achievements to prospective clients among developers, local authorities and international investors. And it also provides an exceptional launch pad alongside their internationally – renowned colleagues for young architects who are still little known in the real estate community,” says Julien Sausset, Director of MIPIM.

Organised by Reed MIDEM, a subsidiary of Reed Exhibitions, MIPIM, the international real-estate show for professionals, will be held in Cannes from 15 to 18 March 2016.

MIPIM 2016 – Enlightening the World

Many architectural firms exhibit their projects at MIPIM every year on their own stands, including KPF (USA), Garde International (Japan), Jaspers Eyers Architects (Belgium), Link Arkitektur (Norway), Tabanlioglu Architects (Turkey), Chapman Taylor, Benoy and Design International (UK).

Architects also exhibit in groups under national banners. Sponsored by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, the AFEX (Architectes Français à l’Export) and its partners will attend MIPIM to promote French architects abroad. At the new Architecture (byFrance stand, MIPIM attendees will be able to find out about the projects entered for the AFEX Grand Prize for Architecture and the AJAP (architect and landscape designer competition) as well as attend a series of presentations on the topic of housing issues in the coming years. The finalists of the 2016 AFEX Grand Prize will be unveiled at an exclusive MIPIM event on Wednesday 16 March at 6.30pm.

For the ninth consecutive year, the German pavilion, created at the initiative of the German Federal Chamber of Architecture, will bring together 26 architects including Eike Becker Architekten Gerber Architekten, Kleihues+Kleihues, GRAFT, Hadi Teherani Architects, and Schneider+Schumacher. Among the national and international projects on show at the pavilion, MIPIM attendees will be able to see models of the new building of Munich Central Station presented by AUER WEBER, the new BASF office tower in Dusseldorf exhibited by Eller+Eller Architekten, the Munich airport extension proposed by Koch+Partner, and the Upper North Tower mixed-use building in Düsseldorf presented by Sauerbruch Hutton Architekten.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) will exhibit again this year in the London pavilion to promote 22 architectural firms including RARE Architecture, AndArchitects shedKM. RIBA will also co-organize a series of conferences on design that will examine a major city centre development. The Design Workshops are organized in partnership with the city of Manchester, and will take place on Tuesday March 15, Wednesday March 16 and Thursday March 17 at 11:30am.

The buildings we inhabit are responsible for 40% of global energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions. In a post-COP21 context, calling on environmentally-responsible architecture will be essential for optimizing resources and materials, reducing energy consumption in buildings by up to 70% through renewable energy, cutting maintenance and building management costs, and improving the quality of life of their users. For example, Green Planet Architects, the leading international network of 800 architects from 80 countries dedicated to sustainable and ecological architecture, will be coming to MIPIM for the first time to showcase over 600 sustainable projects from all corners of the globe.

The Innovation Forum will also put architects centre stage by offering a programme of conferences and networking events dedicated to architecture, startups and urban redevelopment. Among the personalities invited to the Innovation Forum are Ben van Berkel, architect and co-founder of UNStudio, will speak about tomorrow’s buildings, and Tobias Nolte, co-founder of Certain Measures and formerly with Gehry Technologies, will talk about the use of data in designing new spaces.

Innovative companies from the digital ecosystem will also be exhibiting, including the English firm Wagstaffs Design, which will present VuCity, the first interactive map of London; VuFrame, a German company that develops augmented reality applications adapted to the real-estate sector; and Autodesk, which publishes computer-aided design software.

Architecture will also take pride of place in the MIPIM conference programme, especially with the session entitled: How to create value in architecture through art and design (Wednesday, March 16 at 11:30am) where the speakers include Arik Levy, the internationally-recognized artist and designer.

For the first time, MIPIM will present a “Powered by PechaKucha” session on the theme of Housing the World. This new, rapid and amusing presentation format will address topics such as social housing, luxury and the housing crisis. Each speaker will have to convince their audience with 20 images lasting 20 seconds each – a total of six minutes and 40 seconds. Confirmed participants include Kim H. Nielsen, architect and founder of 3XN Architects (Denmark), Simon Takasaki, Director at Takasaki Lauw Architects (Germany) and Jean-Louis Missika, Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of Urbanism, Architecture, Projects of Greater Paris, Economic Development and Attractiveness (France).
